A Guide to Navigating Special Education in Ontario

Are you unsure of your child’s education-related rights?
Has your child been told to stay home because the school couldn’t meet their needs?
Are you struggling to get the support your child needs to learn and be safe while in school?
This resource is for you!
Community Living Ontario and PooranLaw have partnered to create a detailed guide to Ontario’s special education system for students and caregivers. Special education legislation, policy, and programs can be complex and confusing, and the guide is meant to support students and caregivers to engage effectively with the education system and optimize their educational outcomes.
The guide is available in two formats: an online version and a PDF version for those who prefer to read offline.
The guide includes information about Individual Education Plans, the Identification, Placement and Review Committee, every student’s right to be in school, and much more. It offers guidance for students who have been excluded or suspended from school, and for those who have been secluded or restrained while in school. It pulls together all relevant legislation and policy into one place so that you have one resource to turn to when engaging with your school.
