About Surrey Place Spotlight Series: Spotlight series aims to raise awareness and build knowledge of intersecting lived experiences of people with socially, emotionally and/or physically diverse characteristics.
Session Title: “Unlearning Ableism: Creating New Knowledges, Nurturing Self-Advocacy”.
Presenter: Zahra Brown
Date & Time: Thursday, November 14h from 5pm-6pm,
Information about session: As a Black woman, living with disabilities, who bears multiple intersectionalities, while successfully navigating postsecondary education, Zahra’s academic work includes a critical exploration of the value of self-advocacy for people with disabilities. Zahra will employ her compelling public speaking personality to share the value of self-advocacy for people with disabilities and will emphasize the need for stakeholders and organizations supporting peoples with disability to recognize the importance of this value in their praxes.
This spotlight aims to enhance attendees’ critical skills of self-advocacy to enable living and thriving with disabilities. Attendees will learn new languages and knowledge for creating and enabling changes in their everyday life /organization/ profession/. Attendees will learn to identify, rethink and reframe everyday normalizing ableist practices that threaten wellbeing.
