Self-Care & the Power of Connection: A Gathering for Black Parents of Children and Adults with a Disability
Please join us as NACCA and Sawubona are partnering to host a meaningful, community-rooted workshop on January 25th designed specifically for Black parents and caregivers of children and adults with a disability. This event offers a safe and welcoming space for families of African descent to come together, build connections, share resources, and support one another through the layered and often challenging experiences of caregiving. Black families living at the intersection of race and disability navigate compounding pressures—often feeling unseen in systems not designed with them in mind. Sawubona, pronounced SOW:'bɔh:nah (not sah:woo:boh:na), is a Zulu greeting meaning “I see you.” It reflects our commitment to recognizing the worth, dignity, and full humanity of every family member. Our mission is to reduce isolation by creating spaces where Black families can network, problem-solve collectively, and feel genuinely seen. This 2 hour gathering will include: A keynote presentation + Q&A A brief presentation from NACCA Space for fellowship, networking, and light refreshments When: Sunday, Jan 25th Where: 449 Eagle St. Newmarket ON Time: 1pm - 3pm We hope this workshop strengthens Family Support Networks (FSNs), nurtures self-care, and builds ongoing opportunities for shared referrals and future collaborative events aligned with our mission and vision.
