Another season of Sawubona!

Hello Sawubona community!

Hope you are well and that the summer is treating you well. The weather was not bad but of course the season never long enough.

I am attaching our flyers with our meeting dates for the year coming, for both our daytime and evening meetings.

These dates are also noted on our website: https://www.sawubonaacs.org/meetings-and-events

We begin our bi-weekly evening meetings again beginning Tuesday September 10th 7:00-8:30 pm via Zoom. As usual, I will send out the link the Thursday and Monday before as another gentle reminder.

We will begin September with no agenda but an opportunity for you all to set the agenda, joining us with topics on your mind, issues or concerns to bring up or victories you wish to share to encourage others.

We continue to connect with others in the community to engage us in relevant topics such as self-care, mindfulness and trauma, resources to help us along our journey, financial planning and so on. If you have a specific topic in mind AND even a speaker to speak about that topic, please let me know.

Save the date: Sunday December 1st for our annual winter holiday party at Tropicana! More details to come.

And finally, we are still seeking SEAC reps to represent Sawubona on the PEEL district and DURHAM Catholic school boards. We don't wish to lose our spot and opportunity to be a voice for Black families and special education in these school boards. No specific skill is required. You don't even have to be a parent/caregiver to join but should know the issues that are of concern to our community. If you know of someone, who may not presently be a Sawubona member but is an ally and has an interest, please send their contact information my way. If YOU would like to be a representative, please reach out to me. We would love to have you join the team.

We look forward to seeing you all online or at one of our in person events throughout the year. We have plans to do another virtual paint night, a men's event and a storytelling evening. These are in the works and details will be shared in time.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Hello Sawubona,

For this 2024-2025, can we consider having Parents of Black Children on again? It'll be great for newcomers to be aware of them and what their advocacy can do for families. Perhaps having them annually (just before IEP season starts) would benefit. We can discuss at next meeting.

Shoshanna :-)
