Some information on AAC Devices

AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices are tools that help people with speech or language impairments communicate when they cannot speak clearly enough to be understood.

These instructions are for those living in Canada as shared by a parent member.

To get communication devices for children with disabilities, apply for the Ontario Assistive Devices Program (ADP) and explore services from children's treatment centers like Holland Bloorview or KidsAbility, which offer assessments for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Private programs like Easter Seals Ontario can also provide some funding for equipment, and schools can offer support through their speech-language pathologists (SLPs).

1. The Ontario Assistive Devices Program (ADP)

Purpose: The ADP provides funding for communication devices for eligible Ontarians.

Application: You must apply through a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) or Occupational Therapist (OT) who has assessed the child.

Process: After a professional assessment and prescription of a device, you submit the application to the ADP for approval and potential reimbursement for the device.

2. Children's Treatment Centers

Assessments: Centers such as Holland Bloorview, KidsAbility, and the Children's Treatment Network (CTN) offer services like Augmentative Communication Consultation Services (ACCS) to assess a child's communication needs and recommend suitable AAC devices.

Specialized Expertise: These specialized clinics can help with high-technology device assessment, prescription, and navigation of funding options like the ADP.

3. Other Funding and Support Programs

Easter Seals Ontario: This organization provides partial funding for communication devices for children with physical disabilities through its Equipment Funding Program (EFP), with funds coming from public donations.

School System: Parents can speak with their child's school principal to learn about supports available from the school board's speech-language pathologist and special education resource teachers.

Steps to Take:

Contact Your School: Speak to your child's school principal and/or the school's speech-language pathologist for referrals and support.

Seek an Assessment: Work with an SLP or OT to get an assessment of your child's communication needs.

Explore Treatment Centers: Inquire about services at a children's treatment center that provides AAC assessments, like Holland Bloorview or KidsAbility.

Apply for ADP Funding: Have the assessing therapist submit the application to the Ontario Assistive Devices Program.

Check Other Programs: Look into organizations like Easter Seals Ontario for additional funding opportunities.
